The Pre-Health Advising blog is now revamped and better than ever, and we hope to keep it that way! We (Jenni, Megan, and Shasta) are excited to use this tool to communicate better with you and to help answer many of your questions. From this blog you will be able to find information by topics or just by following our daily posts. Much like our Facebook page, this is another space were we can quickly update you regarding health professions, opportunities, and other helpful information.

Slowly but surely we are going to update the information that has been posted in the past and continue to add additional info as it comes our way! Keep an eye out for activity, as we are gaining more momentum!

Farewell from Arwen

Today is my last day as a pre-health advisor at the UO. To all the advisees I have worked with, you have been one of the most enjoyable populations I’ve advised. You are diverse, engaging, smart, and enthusiastic. I’m going to miss working with you. You’ve taught me a great deal.

I will be moving on (moving back) to teaching writing, my first profession, but I will never forget my formative experiences in advising and hope to advise again in the future. I look forward to hearing about your progress toward your health goals from my colleagues in Academic Advising.

Additions to Pre-Health Library!

So perhaps the word “library” seems a bit deceiving. When you walk into Academic Advising (364 Oregon Hall on the U of Oregon campus) and look at the Pre-Health area located above the lobby computers (on your right as you come in), the first thing you’ll notice is that our “library” consists of about half a shelf. But what a shelf it is!

Here you’ll find the MSAR (guide to medical schools), ADEA Guide to Dental Schools, a guide to osteopathic medical schools, a comprehensive directory on health care careers, an official guide to the MCAT, binders with information on various health careers (we aim to include info. that hides on the internet), and lots and lots of handouts and brochures for you to pick up, including information on specific schools and programs, internships, web resources, and much more.

We’ve just added a number of new materials–we’re now occupying well more than half of that shelf. So if you’re coming to Academic Advising for a pre-health appointment or are in the neighborhood M-F 8:00-5:00, stop by and check out our collection of resources. It may be small, but it’s powerful, like Mighty Mouse.

Volunteer in HIV Prevention and Services

The HIV Alliance is looking for enthusiastic and caring volunteers to help educate the community about HIV and provide support services for clients. Volunteer opportunities are available in the needle exchange program, HIV counseling and testing, gay/bi men outreach, education, dental, care coordination, development, board committees and task forces, and general office. Internship opportunities may also be available. You can call the HIV Alliance at 541-342-5088 for more information about any of these opportunities.

Optometry Admission Test (OAT)

Well Child International

Well Child International is a new program offered by International Service Learning (ISL), designed to provide prenatal and pediatric care to underserved communities in countries including Belize, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua.

To be culturally sensitive, the program is currently only open to female team members, but there may be pediatric opportunities for male team members in the future.

Pre-Health Advising Syllabus

The Office of Academic Advising has developed a pre-health advising syllabus, outlining pre-health resources and expectations for advisors and advisees. The syllabus also includes a checklist of tips for success as a pre-health student each term. The syllabus is a available as a PDF on the UO Pre-Health Home Page.

MacKenzie Scholarship Winner, 2010

Congratulations to the recipient of the Kenneth A. J. MacKenzie Scholarship for UO alumni accepted to OHSU School of Medicine, Ximeng Yang, who goes by “Simon.” Simon has worked extensively as an athletic trainer and conditioning coach and has participated in research related to respiratory issues. He looks forward to pursuing his interest in research as a physician while maintaining a high standard of personalized care for his patients. We wish him all the best at OHSU!
